What Is an Nd:YAG Laser?
An Nd:YAG laser is one of the most versatile tools in aesthetic medicine. It’s a single device that can smooth fine lines, even out skin tone, reduce unwanted hair and fade tattoo ink, all without surgery or significant downtime. It works by delivering laser energy beneath the skin, bypassing the outer layer to target the hemoglobin in blood vessels, the pigment in dark spots or hair follicles, and the ink particles in tattoos.
Unlike older laser technologies, the Nd:YAG has a longer 1064 nm wavelength that reaches deeper into the skin, largely ignoring surface melanin. This makes it a “color blind” laser and one of the safest options for patients with medium and dark skin tones, including Fitzpatrick IV-VI.
What Can Nd:YAG Address?
Nd:YAG lasers are true workhorses. Because they can be fine-tuned to target different structures beneath the skin, they’re effective for a wide range of concerns and skin types. At Ayala ENT & Facial Plastic Surgery, we use our Nd:YAG laser for:
- Anti-aging (fine lines, skin laxity, loss of firmness)
- Skin rejuvenation (sun damage, uneven pigmentation, visible facial veins, rough texture)
- Hair reduction (face, body, all skin tones)
- Tattoo removal (black, dark blue and multi-colored inks)
During your consultation, your provider will evaluate your skin and walk you through which treatments make sense for your goals. If multiple concerns are being addressed, they’ll help you decide what to prioritize and how to sequence your sessions for the best results.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Nd:YAG Laser Treatments?
Nd:YAG lasers are generally considered safe for all skin types, making treatment suitable for most adults who want to address the signs of aging, facial redness, an uneven skin tone, unwanted hair, or tattoos they’d like removed. Certain conditions may affect eligibility, including active skin infections, recent tanning or the use of photosensitizing medications.
At Ayala ENT & Facial Plastic Surgery, we use Vectra 3D imaging to analyze your skin and assess its overall condition, evaluating both surface concerns and hidden changes that aren’t immediately visible to the naked eye. This gives us a clearer picture of what your skin needs and helps us determine whether Nd:YAG is the right treatment for your concerns.

Anti-Aging
Collagen is the protein that gives skin its structure, and production naturally slows down as we age. The Nd:YAG laser works beneath the surface to trigger a controlled thermal response in the deeper dermis, prompting new collagen and elastin production. The result is skin that looks smoother and feels tighter without any incisions or injections.
Skin Rejuvenation
Sun exposure in South Texas can cause hyperpigmentation and a rough, uneven texture, while broken blood vessels can give the skin a red, blotchy appearance. Nd:YAG can target the melanin in dark spots and the hemoglobin in small facial veins to improve overall skin tone and restore a clearer, more vibrant complexion.
Hair Reduction
Earlier laser hair removal technology worked best when there was high contrast between skin and hair color, because those systems couldn’t distinguish between the melanin in skin and the melanin in hair. The Nd:YAG doesn’t have that limitation, making it a safe and effective treatment for long-lasting hair reduction in patients with light, medium or dark skin tones.
Most patients need four to six sessions spaced several weeks apart, because the laser is most effective on hair follicles during the active growth phase. Common treatment areas include the face, underarms, bikini line, legs, chest and back.
Tattoo Removal
Tattoos are designed to be permanent, but the Nd:YAG laser can remove them by delivering ultra-short pulses of energy that break the ink particles into smaller pieces. Once fragmented, your body’s immune system clears them naturally over the weeks that follow.
Black and dark blue inks absorb the laser’s energy most efficiently, so those colors tend to fade first. Lighter inks like red, green or yellow may take additional sessions. Most patients need multiple treatments spaced six to eight weeks apart, and factors like the tattoo’s age, location and ink depth all play a role in the overall timeline.
What Is an Nd:YAG Laser Treatment Like?
The experience varies slightly depending on the type of treatment performed, but most Nd:YAG sessions follow a similar pattern.
Before the device is switched on, the skin is cleansed and a topical numbing cream may be applied, depending on your treatment settings. You’ll also be given protective eyewear. Once everything is ready, your provider then moves the handpiece across the skin carefully and methodically, delivering pulses of laser energy into the targeted areas. Many patients describe the sensation as a quick, warm snap that’s noticeable, but tolerable. Built-in cooling helps soothe the skin and keep the surface comfortable throughout your session.
Treatment times vary depending on the concern being addressed. Tattoo removal sessions take about 10 to 30 minutes, hair reduction can take up to an hour for larger areas, and skin rejuvenation treatments take about 15 to 30 minutes. Afterward, you can return home and resume your normal routine with just a few recovery instructions to ensure optimal results.
Is There Any Downtime after an Nd:YAG Laser Treatment?
Downtime is minimal for most Nd:YAG laser treatments. You may notice some redness or mild swelling in the treated area, similar to a light sunburn. These effects usually resolve within a few hours to a couple of days.
For tattoo removal, some patients experience temporary blistering or crusting as the treated skin heals. This is a normal part of the process and typically resolves within one to two weeks. Your provider will give you detailed aftercare instructions to help the skin heal properly.
Regardless of the treatment type, sun protection is especially important after a laser session. The treated skin is more sensitive to UV exposure, so wearing a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is recommended, along with limiting direct sun exposure for the first week or two.
When Will I See Results?
How your results develop depends on the treatment being performed. For skin rejuvenation and pigmentation concerns, patients often notice an improvement within two to four weeks. Collagen-related benefits appear more gradually, with results becoming increasingly visible over the course of two to three months.
Hair reduction results are progressive. Because hair grows in cycles, you’ll see a noticeable decrease in hair density after each session, with the most significant results typically visible after the third or fourth treatment.
Tattoo removal is the most gradual process. Fading becomes visible within the weeks following each session, but complete removal can take six to 12 sessions.
