Neck Lift in McAllen, TX
Dr. Carlos Ayala, Double Board-Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon
Dr. Carlos Ayala is a double board-certified otolaryngologist and facial plastic surgeon who cares for patients across the Rio Grande Valley and the South Texas region. He performs neck lift surgery in McAllen for patients in all of the surrounding areas, including Edinburg, Mission, Brownsville and Corpus Christi. Patients also come from out of state to take advantage of Dr. Ayala’s experience.
The neck is often one of the first places where age becomes more visible. Skin in this area is thin and can start to sag and loosen. Fat tends to collect in the area beneath the chin, and jowls can blur the defined lines of the jaw. A neck lift restores much of this definition in the lower face and neck.
At Ayala ENT & Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Ayala works hard to understand every patient before recommending a plan. This results in natural-looking contours that fit each patient’s anatomy and goals.

What Is a Neck Lift?
A neck lift, also known as platysmaplasty or cervicoplasty, is a surgical procedure that rejuvenates the area below the jaw and on the neck. It corrects the loose skin and muscle banding that develop with age and is often performed alongside excess fat removal underneath the chin.
During this surgery, the broad sheet of muscle in the neck called the platysma is lifted and adjusted. With age, this muscle can separate, and the overlying skin can begin to sag, which results in the vertical cords and horizontal lines often seen in this area. Repositioning the muscle and removing surplus skin can produce both a smoother neckline and a sharper jawline.
What Can a Neck Lift Address?
This procedure can correct:
- A heavy or full appearance under the chin
- Vertical neck bands caused by the platysma muscle
- Loose or sagging skin along the neck
- A poorly defined jawline or neck angle
- Lingering changes after major weight loss
Neck lift surgery is often combined with other surgical procedures to address concerns outside the scope of a neck lift. This can include a facelift for signs of aging in the lower face or chin liposuction to address excess fat.
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Neck Lift?
The best candidates for a neck lift are healthy adults of any age who are bothered by visible skin aging in the neck. Nonsmokers heal more predictably, so Dr. Ayala asks all of his patients to avoid nicotine before and after neck lift surgery. Those who have a stable weight are also better candidates, as weight changes can alter results.
Neck Lift Techniques at Ayala ENT & Facial Plastic Surgery
Dr. Ayala chooses his technique based on each person’s situation and anatomy. Techniques include:
Platysmaplasty
Platysmaplasty repairs the platysma muscles, which split down the center of the neck and form visible bands as a person ages. Using a small incision under the chin, Dr. Ayala stitches the muscle back together to create a firm, smooth foundation for the neck.
Skin Tightening and Removal
If you have excess skin, Dr. Ayala can redrape the tissue of the neck and trim away what is no longer needed, usually through discreet incisions behind the ears. This eliminates the loose folds that cannot be treated with nonsurgical treatments or liposuction.
Deep Plane Neck Lift
In more advanced cases, Dr. Ayala can work beneath the deeper support layers of the neck and lower face. This approach lifts the foundation rather than just the skin and produces a result that can last for many years. It calls for surgical skill and experience.
Combining a Neck Lift With a Facelift
The face and neck often age on the same schedule, and the two are often treated together. Pairing a facelift with a neck lift can treat sagging in the lower face along with the neck for a more unified result.
Submental (Chin) Liposuction
One procedure that is closely related to the neck lift is submental liposuction. It addresses a similar area as a neck lift, but is used in slightly different circumstances. Chin liposuction may be the right tool for you, either on its own or alongside neck lift surgery.
What Is Submental Liposuction?
Submental liposuction is a less invasive procedure that removes fat from beneath the chin through a tiny incision, usually hidden in the natural crease under the jaw. Dr. Ayala uses a thin cannula to suction away the localized fat that creates this fullness. Recovery from chin liposuction is relatively quick, with most patients back to their usual activities within a few days.
Is Chin Liposuction Right for You?
The right candidate for this procedure on its own should have good skin elasticity, paired with a stubborn pocket of fat under the chin. This is common in younger patients whose skin still retracts easily with fat loss. When too much skin laxity is present, liposuction by itself can make the area look deflated, so Dr. Ayala will evaluate your skin tone closely before making a recommendation.
Should I Choose Liposuction or a Neck Lift?
Liposuction suits a neck with extra volume but no sagging, whereas a neck lift is suitable for those who need muscle tightening and removal of excess skin. It is possible for both to exist at the same time, in which case Dr. Ayala will combine both surgeries.
What Happens During Neck Lift Surgery?
A neck lift at Ayala ENT & Facial Plastic Surgery takes place in an accredited surgical facility under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. Most procedures last two to three hours, though the timing will depend on how much work the neck requires.
Once you are comfortable, Dr. Ayala will make the planned incisions beneath the chin and behind the ears, where they stay well concealed. If liposuction is part of the plan, he will remove the excess fat and then tighten the platysma muscle to reposition tissue. Then he will remove any excess skin before closing the incisions. The last step is applying a dressing or support garment to keep the area protected during the first few days of healing.
What Is Neck Lift Recovery Like?
Your recovery experience will differ depending on the type of surgery that Dr. Ayala has performed. Liposuction will have a faster bounce-back, while a lift will involve more downtime. In general, you can expect to follow this timeline:
- Days 1 to 7: You will wear your support garment continuously to control swelling. Tightness and bruising peak during this stretch, so plenty of rest matters.
- Weeks 1 to 2: Most bruising fades, and you can head back to desk work and gentle daily routines with Dr. Ayala’s approval.
- Weeks 3 to 6: Swelling continues to decrease, and the new contour of the neck becomes clearer. Vigorous exercise should still wait.
- Months 3 to 6: The neckline looks refined as the last of the swelling resolves, and you will feel like yourself again.
