What is Sinus Drainage?

Sinus drainage, known as post-nasal drip, occurs when the glands inside your nose release mucous to moisturize, cleanse, and protect the mucous membranes. When you experience allergies and other nose conditions, these glands release a higher level of mucous, leading to a runny nose and mucus that runs down your throat. When the mucus escapes into the throat, it can cause coughing, a feeling of gagging, sore throat, and other symptoms.

What Are Sinus Rinses?

Sinus rinses are treatments that help with irritants inside the sinuses by rinsing away excess mucus and any impurities in the mucous membranes. The rinses typically involve allowing a saline solution to flow into one nostril, through the sinuses, and out the other nostril.

What is Balloon Sinuplasty?

If sinus rinses do not help with your symptoms and sinus drainage, Dr. Ayala may recommend balloon sinuplasty to clear out the nasal cavity. It helps to open up the sinuses without removing any bone, cartilage, and soft tissues.

What Are the Benefits of Balloon Sinuplasty?

  • Non-surgical
  • Opens the sinus cavity
  • Alleviates common symptoms caused by blockages inside the nose

What Should I Expect from Balloon Sinuplasty?

Balloon sinuplasty is a four-step procedure.

  1. A catheter with a special balloon is inserted into the sinuses.
  2. The balloon is slowly inflated to open up the sinuses.
  3. Dr. Ayala sprays saline into the sinus area via the catheter.
  4. Pus and mucous are flushed out of the sinuses, and the catheter is removed from the passageway.

After a balloon sinuplasty, your sinuses are more open, and you can breathe more easily. You may also have fewer symptoms, such as congestion, discharge and trouble breathing.

What is the Recovery Like After Balloon Sinuplasty?

Every patient and every recovery is different. Some of the potential recovery complications following a balloon sinuplasty could include:

  • Bruising or facial swelling
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Scarring
