What is Septoplasty?
The septum is a bone and cartilage structure that normally follows a straight path down the middle of the nose as a separation between the two sides. A deviated septum is one in which the septum is not straight, either due to trauma or congenital abnormalities. Septoplasty is a type of nose surgery that repairs the septum to align it properly and improve breathing.
What Are the Benefits of Septoplasty?
No septum is perfectly straight, and your body is able to compensate for minor abnormalities. Patients with moderate to severe deviation experience a range of symptoms. Septoplasty is intended to improve airflow, keep the mucous membranes moist, and alleviate sinus symptoms.
Who is a Good Candidate for Septoplasty?
You may be a good candidate for septoplasty if you experience:
- Frequent nosebleeds
- Snoring
- Trouble sleeping due to breathing problems
- Sinus congestion
- Frequent sinus infections
- Crusting inside the nose and around the nostrils
- Post-nasal drip
- Chronic runny nose

What Should I Expect from Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is performed using local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery. After the procedure, expect to have swelling, nasal discharge, discomfort, and other symptoms as the septum heals. Other potential complications after surgery include:
- Bruising or facial swelling
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Scarring
- Asymmetry
- Septal perforation
- Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak
- Reoperation
Dr. Ayala provides aftercare instructions that include restrictions to your activities, resting at home, and how to ensure the septum heals properly.
