What is Eyelid Surgery?

Aging affects every area of your face, including your upper and lower eyelids. The skin loses elasticity and collagen that gives it a firm appearance. This results in sagging. The upper eyelids hang lower over the eyeball, giving you a tired appearance, and you may notice that it is harder to keep your eyes open when watching television or reading. Sagging in the lower eyelids gives you a drawn appearance and may expose the pink tissue inside the eyelid. Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that removes excess skin and fat from the eyelids to rejuvenate the eye area. Patients who have the surgery may also experience less eye fatigue.

Who is a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

The best candidate for blepharoplasty is someone who has sagging upper or lower eyelids that affect the overall appearance of the eyes.

What is the Procedure for Blepharoplasty?

Upper eyelid surgery begins with making an incision in the natural crease just above the eyeball. Dr. Ayala gently tightens the skin and removes any excess fat and skin. For lower eyelid surgery, the incision is made at the base of the lower eyelashes and the excess skin and fat are removed.

What is Recovery Like After Eyelid Surgery?

Expect your recovery from blepharoplasty to take a few weeks. You will rest at home for the first week, and the sutures are removed during this time. You may continue to have some redness and swelling for a few weeks after the surgery.  Other potential complications that could arise post-surgery include:

  • Bruising or facial swelling
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Scarring
  • Reoperation
  • Asymmetry

We recommend that you arrange for a friend or family member to stay with you during the first seven days, as you will have limited use of your eyes.
