The turbinates are structures inside the nose that are near the septum. In a healthy nasal passage, there is space between the septum and turbinates to allow air flow. Dr. Ayala may recommend turbinoplasty to modify the turbinates in your nose if the structures are too large to allow air to pass. You have three turbinates inside your nose—the interior, middle, and superior. Turbinoplasty may be needed on one or more of the turbinates.
The primary goal of turbinoplasty is to open the airway inside the nose to alleviate a feeling of a stuffy nose. Typically, Dr. Ayala has his patients use medications first to reduce the size of the turbinates. If this approach does not produce the desired results, surgery is recommended.
The best candidate for turbinoplasty is a person who experiences chronic congestion inside the nose that is due to large turbinates.
General anesthesia is used for turbinoplasty. No incisions are needed on the outside of the nose. Dr. Ayala uses special instruments, including the TURBINATOR Turbinate Reduction Wand with COBLATION technology by ArthroCare Corporation, to access the turbinates and remove excess tissue and cartilage. After the procedure, your nostrils may be packed with materials that control bleeding and allow the tissues to heal.
You return home the same day. You may have some discomfort. The packs in the nose are removed after 24 hours, and the healing process can take up to six weeks.
