What Is a Brow Lift?

A brow lift, also called a forehead lift, is a surgical procedure that raises the brows and smooths the forehead to reverse the visible effects of aging in the upper third of the face. Once the skin has lost the collagen and elastin that kept it firm, gravity can have more of an effect, pulling the soft tissue of the brow downward and settling it into a lower position. A lowered brow can crowd the eyes and deepen the lines across the forehead. Because the brow and the upper eyelids are closely related, Dr. Ayala evaluates both areas together when planning your treatment.

Lateral Brow Lift

A lateral brow lift focuses on the outer portion of the brow, which is usually the first area to descend with age because the frontalis muscle doesn’t extend to this area. Elevating the tail of the brow opens the outer corner of the eye and reduces early signs of aging. Dr. Ayala uses this option for patients who won’t need as much correction in the center of the brow to see a more refreshed and youthful appearance.

What Happens During Brow Lift Surgery?

Brow lift surgery at Ayala ENT & Facial Plastic Surgery is performed at an accredited surgical facility under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. Most procedures take one to two hours, though this timing will depend on the technique used and whether any additional work is being done at the same time.

Once you are comfortable and the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Ayala will make the incision, either just above the brow for a direct lift or near the tail of the brow for a lateral lift. He then lifts and repositions the tissue, removing excess skin. The underlying muscles can also be adjusted to improve the lift. Once the lift has been performed, incisions are closed to keep any scarring discreet and a light dressing is applied to protect the area as it heals.

What Is Brow Lift Recovery Like?

Your recovery will depend on the technique and the extent of your procedure. Usually, a lateral lift involves a shorter downtime. A typical healing timeline often looks like this:

  • Days 1 to 10: Expect swelling, bruising and a feeling of tightness across the forehead. Keeping your head elevated helps the swelling settle more quickly.
  • Weeks 1 to 2: Sutures are typically removed during this window, and the worst of the bruising fades. Many patients return to desk work and gentle daily routines.

  • Months 3 to 6: Lingering swelling continues to fade, and your result looks increasingly natural and settled.

Will a brow lift help my droopy eyelids?
