How Rhinoplasty Can Make Your Nose Stunning

It sounds a bit like something you’d do on the African Safari, but a rhinoplasty is actually a procedure you’re more familiar with when called a “nose job”. In the minds of many people, rhinoplasty is merely a way to bolster our own vanity or perfect some real or perceived flaw, but a nose job can be performed for medical reasons as well and is a fantastic way of dealing with trauma or damage to the nose. If you’re considering rhinoplasty or your physician has mentioned that it may be helpful to you, then read through the following to get a greater understanding of how the treatment may benefit you.

What Types of Rhinoplasty Are There?
There are two basic types of rhinoplasty, closed and open, each used in specific instances where the surgeon requires different things from the surgery. In a closed rhinoplasty, all of the incisions are made in the columella, that piece of skin that is found between the nostrils and serves as a separating element. This procedure is often preferred as it gives good access to the internal structures but doesn’t leave a scar. The Open Rhinoplasty, on the other hand, involves a horizontal incision across the columella allowing the nose’s tip to be shaped and lifted. Some scar tissue is left with this form of procedure.

That’s It? Just Two Types?
Not at all! There are multiple types of rhinoplasty based on the needs of the patient, but all of them fall into closed or open rhinoplasty or can be performed either way. The types of procedures that can be performed are as follows:

• Revision Rhinoplasty – As the name implies this form of rhinoplasty is performed as a follow-up of a previously performed procedure. Typically it is used for corrections or cosmetic changes.
• Filler Rhinoplasty – This form of rhinoplasty doesn’t require surgery at all, but is, in fact, an injection of Restylane or Juvederm. While temporary it can often successfully correct imperfections in the structure of the nose.
• Reduction/Augmentation Rhinoplasty – These forms of rhinoplasty involve the reduction of or enlargement of the nose or its elements.
• Post-Traumatic Rhinoplasty – When a patient’s nose has suffered traumatic damage it can affect both function and appearance, and that’s when this form of surgery is applied to restore both.
• Reconstruction Therapy – In cases of particularly bad trauma, or as the result of some other medical concern, the nose itself may have to be reconstructed, and may take multiple operations to accomplish.

What Risks Come With Getting a Rhinoplasty?
While all procedures are relatively safe, there are always potential risks associated with medical procedures, and rhinoplasty is no exception. Some of the risks associated with rhinoplasty, in rare cases, are infection, scarring, numbness, burst blood vessels, chronic nosebleeds, septal perforations, and the need for revision rhinoplasty. None of these are common, but they are known risks.
